It
was Saturday night. Nothing to do. At some point we wandered over
to the bookcase and began making fun of book covers. Then we started
guessing when they were published. Thus began an extensive education
in design history.
In high school, my brother, David, and I started a game we call "Name
That Publishing Date". We didn't know it then, but something
we did because we were bored out of our minds became a fun game we
could impress (or scare) people with and a way to learn design trends
of past decades.

Now
you too can play this exciting game. Of course, this online version
is only a preview of the fun that can be had at the family book shelf.
How the Game is Played:
1. Look at the book cover. Pay attention to fonts, colors, and design
sentiments.
2. Guess the year it was published. (Novice players may guess the
early, middle, or late part of the decade.)
3. Open the book and check your guess! (Or click the >> button
for this online version.) Note distinct design elements to remember
for the next book you guess.
